Buon Giorno, Minori

(July 6) I’d had three hours sleep and although my eyes are heavy, I just could not get to sleep. So, at 5:30am I ventured out of the hotel room to see Minori in the early morning hours. The full moon shone bright still in the sky, the street lamps were still on, but the sun had not come over the top of the steep mountains just yet. The SITA bus was beeping as it turned corners, older men and ladies were already sitting at the outdoor tables near the coffee shops, there were several men walking their dogs, and the same lone cat Marianna saw last night was sitting near the beach cleaning itself. But what struck me most was an elderly couple in the ocean. She stood in the water up to her thighs wearing red shorts and a black tank top facing the shore. He crouched in the water immersing all but his shoulders, but faced the shore, too. There was about 15 feet distance between them and they stayed completely still, as the sky grew light behind them. I walked from one end of Minori to the other with the iPad in search of free WiFi, but nothing. After an amazing cup of cappuccino (I did the Italian thing and stood at the bar with the rest of the locals,) I headed back towards the hotel and the couple was still there…motionless in the water 45 minutes later.
